This site is dedicated to the legends of Britain's last wolves, in particular to the last wolves of the Highlands of Scotland. It was in the Highlands that the very last British wolf perished, though the location of its demise is as fluid as the stories that tell of its passing.

Here are the tales of hunters, and of creatures who were savagely exterminated in the days when there was no sentimentality for a beast that was seen as a threat to the livelihood of the crofter and the farmer and, in Christian iconography, as an embodiment of Old Nick himself.

My interest in the folklore of the wolf, fuelled by the fact that I live in the Highlands, led me to create a show consisting of stories, songs and music with a vulpine theme. It's called The Last Wolf: and Other Tales, and was launched at the Bleddfa Centre in Powys. Bleddfa, in Welsh, appropriately means the place of the wolf. The show subsequently toured the Highlands, and played both in the Universal Hall at the Findhorn Foundation, and at the International Storytelling Festival in Edinburgh.

Many of the stories in these pages are featured in the show, which can be booked for tours and for single performances. For a more general overview of my work as a storyteller and musician, please look at my website, www.bobpegg.com.

The image at the head of this page is by John Hodkinson. It's based on a photograph I took some years back of one on the wolves in the Highland Wildlife Park in Kincraig, and comes from a series of digital prints based on Highland tales that John made for an exhibition called The Tin Road, as part of The Merry Dancers Storytelling Project. John's other work, including the rest of the Tin Road prints can be seen by going to www.harthead.com, and clicking on the Orizen link.
